That evening I sit at my desk, reading. The book, translated by one Oscar Garza and printed by the University of Texas Press, helps me sort out my new memories. Alejandro pulled from the archives that my protectors kept over the centuries to compose his epic verse, and while he takes some liberties, he gets the tragic tale right enough. I spend a few hours grappling with my feelings while Steamboat Springs hisses and rumbles in the distance.

A phone call shakes me free of these emotional aftershocks. It’s Blanca.

“Hello,” I say. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, totally fine. I was reading the book and felt kind of sad. Wanted to hear your voice.”

“I cheer you up, do I?”

She pauses, then laughs. “You do a little more than cheer me up, Greg. I don’t know what’s gotten into me. Being around you makes me happy. Warm inside. But I’m also nervous. Does that make sense?”

“Yeah. It’s hard for us to accept that we deserve happiness. It’s been kept from us for so long. But let’s be greedy, Blanca. Let’s take every joy we’re owed and more.”

A sniffle tells me she’s been touched by my words. “That sounds wonderful.”

On impulse, I plow ahead. “Why don’t we have dinner this weekend? Say, Saturday?”

“Like a date, date?” she asks, somewhat hesitant.

“Yes.” I switch to a mock British accent. “Will you accompany me on a real date, Ms. Montes?”

“I most certainly will, Mr. Chan.”
